Annex - 5:
Technical Notes On Annapurna Skyline Trek (Light - ONE DAY)

This trek route covers southwest part of Annapurna Conservation Area. The trek starts after one hour’s drive from Pokhara from the highest point of Kande (about 6,500 ft.) on the highway. After the gentle and only climb of about one hour, you reach the highest point of Austrlian Camp (about 7,500 ft.).

Annapurna base camp

After descending to Potana, the trek route is very easy and most interesting up to Chandrakot and Lumle (at the highway), which takes about 4 hours from Austrlian Camp. The view from Austrlian Camp is one of the best in Nepal. The panoramic and over-powering view of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) at the west, Annapurna-I (8,051 m) and other famous peaks like Gangapurna, Annapurna II, III, IV, Lamjung in the north and Manaslu and Ganesh Ranges at the east, is stunning. From here you will also have the very close view of Mt. Fish Tail, Annapurna South and Himchuli (standing right in front of you, only at an aerial distance of about 15 kilometers). Throughout the 4 hours trek, you will be seeing the famous and enchanting Annapurna Skyline almost all the time. For the scientists, students and special interest (hobby) trekkers, this trek route can be highly rewarding. The experts opine that this may be one of the best in the world in Grade - 1 category. On the way, you can see some very beautiful villages of Gorkha soldiers and observe craftsmen and women at work as well. Our guide can tell you about the history and culture of local people on the way.

People of Annapurna area

Annapurna Region is recognized internationally, to contain some of the most pristine wilderness, which is one of the most important habitat in the world for a very wide variety of Alpine plants, animals and birds. So far, more than 441 species of common, rare and near extent birds, more than 30 mammals, 100 varieties of orchids and hundreds of species of herbal and flowering plants and trees etc. are recorded. Mostly because of wide range of altitudes and climatic conditions, an exceptionally high degree of diversity in its flora and fauna is found in Annapurna Conservation Area. Schima and chestnut trees are found in the sub-tropical forests between 1,000-2,000 m which give way to rhododendron, oak, hemlock and silver fir as you ascend to temperature zone. This trek passes mostly through very dense forests of oaks and rhododendrons. You may be able to see sub-alpine forests of birch and juniper etc. on the way. One can see hundreds of species of wild flowers, herbal plants and butterflies.

For the bird watchers, this area is very unique and different from what one sees in Royal Chitwan National Park. One study in 1988 has recorded 8,000 individuals of species of 'Birds of Prey' alone. 'Spiny Babbler' (Turdoides Nepalesis) is the extremely rare bird found only here and no where in the world. The species declared as 'endangered' are Rofous-throated hill Partridge, Mountain Scopes Owl, Redheaded Tragon, Grey-chinned Warbler, Golden Babbler, grey sided Laughing Thrush, Blue-winged Laughing thrush, Cutia and Black-headed Shrike Babbler.
